Thai Basketry
Thai basket weaving is an ancient art in Thailand. The art of Thai basketry can be traced as far back as the Sukhothai Period, some 800 years ago. There are a number of old paintings showing villagers using containers made from bamboo, rattan and a few old other natural materials found in abundance in Thailand. In the olden day, these basketry items were simple in production and design, benefiting the uses of the time. Nowadays, the production process and designs have been developed and become more sophisticated and more attractive. Thai basketry is usually made from bamboo, rattan. Woven products in Thailand include not only baskets but also some furnishing items, food containers, fish traps and many things used in everyday life. The popularity of Thai basketry items is growing rapidly not only in the domestic market but abroad as well. Our major markets are the United States, Japan, Germany, Italy and England.
